- About Bujinkan Budo Taijutsu -

The official name for our art is Bujinkan Budo Taijutsu.   It consists of nine separate ryu, or schools, the oldest going back more than 900 years.  Masaaki Hatsumi has inherited the title of Soke, or grandmaster, for each of the following traditions:

Traditionally, training involved 18 separate fields of study:

  • Spiritual refinement
  • Unarmed combat
  • Ninja sword techniques
  • Stick fighting techniques
  • Throwing blade techniques
  • Spear fighting
  • halberd fighting
  • chain and sickle weapon
  • Fire and explosives
  • Disguise and impersonation
  • Stealth techniques
  • Horsemanship
  • Water techniques
  • Combat strategy
  • Espionage
  • Escape and concealment
  • Meteorology
  • Geography

Today, training emphasises the combat techniques that have been proven on the battle field for more than 900 years.  Safety is foremost in the training hall.   Students are encouraged to learn at their own pace and to practice at a safe speed.

Spiritual refinement also makes up part of today's training, particularly at the higher levels.
